DC Coalition Contributes to Delay of Multiple Walmart Stores in Nation’s Capital

Walmart announced that the company will delay construction on five of the six proposed stores in the District of Columbia. This news is a direct response to the hard work of the Respect DC campaign, which has been tireless in its efforts to raise awareness in D.C. about Walmart’s poverty jobs and broken promises. The trend of victories for local community groups seems to have continued into this week, and Walmart Free NYC will be proud when we can make a similar announcement! Watch a news story about the latest victory in DC.

Celebrate Walmart at 50: Tell us why YOU think it’s time to change Walmart

As Walmart celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we will paint the true story of Walmart and how they undermine our values and re-write the rules of our society. Now, more than ever, Walmart must change. It’s up to us to share our stories and set the direction for next 50 years.

The multi-faceted, interactive “50 Years of Walmart” website (walmartat50.org) will highlight people from across America and around the globe sharing 1) how Walmart has impacted their lives and communities; 2) why Walmart must change so the next 50 years will be different and; 3) their commitment to take action this year to make this change happen.

This spring, our stories and our commitment to action will be heard.

Your voice will inspire others to share their stories as we get ready to descend on Bentonville, AR for the company’s annual Shareholders’ Meeting. Our individual stories will be used to tell the greater narrative of Walmart’s contribution to the decline of the American middle class, and as a commitment to take action now.

Why are YOU invested in changing Walmart and changing America? Upload a video of yourself at YouTube.com and send the URL to info@ForRespect.org. You can also email a photo and written story.

L.A. council votes too late to block Chinatown Wal-Mart project

The council votes to draft a law temporarily banning large chain stores from opening in the neighborhood. But the firm had obtained permits a day earlier. The near-miss in LA should serve as a reminder for us all to act quickly when a new Walmart is proposed in our neighborhoods.
